Keraleeya Samajam (Regd.) Dombivli is a high-profile socio-cultural organization of the city. It represents the collective aspirations and values of the Keraleeya Samajam and the community that it most ably represents. Since its inception in the year 1949, the Keraleeya Samajam (KS) has been deeply committed to the promotion of education, culture, arts and sports. Model School, and later on Model College, run by the Management belonging to Keraleeya Samajam epitomizes these high standards. It is a remarkable journey of process in the last 5 decades for the Keraleeya Samajam.
The Keraleeya Samajam first set-up a kinder-garden in the year 1966 and encouraged by the positive response by the parents, it established a secondary school at Pandurangawadi. Presently Model School has got three sub-centres: Primary School at Baji Prabhu Chowk, Dombivli (East), Vishnunagar, Dombivli (West) and Secondary School at Kumbharkhanpada, Dombivli (West). Now, further motivated by the success of Model School, the Keraleeya Samajam decided to start a Junior & Degree College. Model College was thus established in M.I.D.C. Dombivli (East) in the year 1989. Since then College has grown phenomenally. In last four years, it has been providing not only traditional grant-in-aid courses in commerce but also self-financing, job oriented courses in commerce stream. Apart from this, there are other professional courses being offered, like B.Sc. (I.T.), B.Sc. (Bio-tech), B.Sc. (C.S.) and Science at Junior College level to cater to the demands of the Industry. The College is also running a successful evening centre for Post Graduate Courses in Accountancy and Management in the year 2007-2008. The Personal Contact Programme of Institute of Distance Education is also conducted from the year 2007-2008. The college in the year 2006-2007, got “A Grade” the first one to get this coveted Grade in recent times, in the entire Thane District. It is also one among the few colleges in Mumbai that has got this distinction.
The results of H.S.C. and T.Y.B.Com. traditional, Self-Financing, I.T. speak for themselves. The college has been maintaining the percentage of (1998-99) at H.S.C. level and 90% at T.Y.B.Com. level, 100% at I.T. and Self-Financing.
Model College, a minority institution also got U.G.C. Recognition 2(f) 12 (B). In other words it means that the college is now permanently affiliated & recognize by the University Grant Commission, New Delhi. It is entitled to all the financial grants & other benefits.
The college is known for its strict discipline & regularly in holding of lectures. It has emerged as a leader in this area in the field of Commerce and Science education. It has also achieved spectacular results in sports and cultural activities. It is multi-disciplinary, multi-faculty and highly diversified college with the cosmopolitan culture. Infrastructure / Teaching Facilities
The library occupies a prime position in any institution. It is spread over 1800 sq. ft. It is a combination of reading room and the book section. It has got an impressive collection of books. It is open from 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. Following are the rules & regulations of the library,
1. Every student entering the Library premises should have a valid College Identity Card. It should be produced as and when demanded by any of the Library staff. 2. Identity Card and Library Card are not transferable. 3. Students must handle the books or periodicals etc. with great care. Any attempt to damage books or periodicals by defacing or tearing the pages will be treated as misconduct and strictly dealt with. 4. If the original I-card or Library card is lost, a duplicate will be issued on payment of Rs. 100/- each. 5. Complete silence and strict discipline be maintained in the Library & Study Room. 6. Text books, reference books & journals will be issued to students against I-Cards, Students are not allowed to take them outside the Study Room. 7. If any reference is required, Students should approach the Librarian / Assist. Librarian. 8. Every student is expected to read and strictly follow the instructions given on the reverse side of the reader’s ticket. 9. In case of late return of books, students will have to pay a fine @ Rs. 2/- per day for the first week and Rs.4/- per day afterwards. In case of serious default , the amount of fine may be increased up to Rs. 10/- per day. 10. While charging the fine, holidays will be counted. 11. Only textbooks will be issued for Home-reading. 12. Re-issue of the books will depend upon the demand for the same. 13. Any disregard of these rules will be reported to the principal for appropriate action.
The main objective of the Book bank is to provide textbooks to the students who are economically backward and those who are required to set of books for the whole year, which is not made available to them on their library cards.
The Book bank collects Rs. 10 per book and Rs. 50 as refundable deposit. The amount of Rs. 10 per book is utilized for repairing and buying some additional textbooks.
The college has two well equipped laboratories on the First floor. Both the Labs are having internet connection & is accessible to the students and faculty. In both labs the practicals of various classes like T.Y.B.Com, B.M.S, Banking & Insurance and B.Sc IT & Computer Science classes are held. The computer centre is managed by Hardware Engineer and supervised by the Professor In-charge. The labs are open from 07.00a.m to 07.00 pm on all working days. On the stilt area ground floor a computer center developed for Administrative wok & also it has internet facility hence acts as a internet cafeteria.
Every year about 200 students are enrolled in the month of June. The regular NSS activities include tree plantations, blood donation, area cleaning, mob control, pulse polio survey, district level programme, lectures on health and hygiene etc. In addition during vacation, a Y.F.S.D. camp is organised in nearby villages. During the camp, medical check up of the villagers, area clearning, pulse polio campaign, tree planation, AIDS awareness are all undertaken. The NSS volunteers also respond positively to the needs of the local NGOs with regard to social activities.
Various sports activities are undertaken by the gymkhana of the college throughout the year . Competitions are held in chess, carrom, table tennis, volley ball, foot ball, kho-kho, kabaddi, athletics, boxing, handball, cricket etc.
